Abstract

Eco-feminism seeks to explore and document the role of women in shaping human engagement with ecological process. It looks at the discourse of environmentalism from the perspective of gender. The paper is an attempt to trace the process of emergence of eco-feminism as an activist and scholarly engagement in India. Even though eco-feminism emerged as a response of activists to the ecological degradation and its impact on women initially, it gradually transformed into a scholarly engagement with wide range of socio-ecological issues with particular focus on the concerns of women. This paper proposes that several approaches have been evolved in the last three decades to capture the relationship between women and ecology in India.
